Today, March 26 at 8:30pm people from all different walks of life will be turning of their lights for one hour. It’s called Earth Hour and its purpose is to encourage power conservation well beyond the one hour without light.
I remember last year during April I stumbled across an article on Earth Hour and was so bummed that I had missed it. I can recall thinking that next year I will be a part of this and here it is! Today!
I’m not sure why but it seems very powerful to me that people from all different walks of life will be involved together in this one hour. Even the Empire State Building will be going dark for the hour!
Over the past year I have become very aware of my personal use of electricity and have made significant efforts to cut down on my use. Even though I switched to wind energy anyway, I still became more purposeful in my use of anything that needs to be plugged in. It may be small compared to the strides that alternative energy has made in the past 5 years but I believe it still counts. I had a conversation with someone recently who felt that her energy conservation actions would be so minuscule so whats the point if it’s a drop in the bucket?. I explained that I used to feel the same way!. We have been encouraged to think that we can’t make a difference but that just isn’t so. If everyone would take the small steps that they deem insignificant it actually would make a huge difference. We as individuals count and we all live on this planet so we are responsible for taking care of it. Call it being Earth Landlords if you want but if we can shift our focus to minding the earth more, making sure her plumbing is working, that her safety codes are up to par, that the energy she uses is cost efficient and safe, then we would all be walking around with a lot more purpose and focus in our lives.
So light a candle tonight at 8:30pm and enjoy giving the planet a much needed rest for an hour!. It’s like an earth power nap. Who doesn’t love a power nap?!.
