It is September now and even though I will miss the berries of summer, I am really looking forward to the apples of Autumn. Good movie title there-Apples of Autumn, I like it. Anyway, this post is about the amazing apple. Here are four things that I love and find fascinating about this fruit.
Possibilities:
Well, the possibilities are endless really! Raw apples, baked apples, apple pie, apple crisp, apples and oats. You get the idea. I will be baking a vegan apple crisp later this week. Will post the recipe if all goes tasty.
Variety:
Something for everyone. Many fruits have more than one variety but it seems like apples have the most. I am on a Gala apple kick right now but I also love the Fugi apple. And with names like Honey Crisp apple and The Pink Lady apple, the varieties keep getting better and better.
Symbolism:
First one comes to mind is Adam and Eve for sure. The apple is mired in controversy as an irresistible fruit. An apple and a woman combined…forget about it!
Then of course, we have the apple representing the new school year. Back to school signs, “best teacher” mugs and school bulletin boards all play host to the apple. The caterpillar likes to make an appearance along side the apple as well I have noticed.
It is customary during the Jewish new year which occurs in Autumn, to eat apples and honey in order to insure a sweet year for yourself. Try dipping apples in brown rice syrup, a fantastic honey substitute!
Health of course!
You know I wouldn’t write a whole post on apples and not talk about the health aspects right?!
Well, you guessed it, the apple boasts an explosion of nutritional happiness. Apples’ health benefits have been researched extensively and have been found to protect against liver, breast, colon and lung cancer. It can help prevent and reduce asthma symptoms and help stabilize weight as well as diabetes management. For more apple info check out this article at health diaries.
What do you love about apples? Which variety is your favorite? Can you think of any other apple symbolisms? Please do share with the class!
Happy apple picking folks.

I really go through on/off phases with apples. Sometimes I love em & am all about eating them & at other times I have zero interest in eating them at all! The latter mentioned phase could be a result of my habits-that when I like a food, i tend to eat it often (& i mean often!) & perhaps that contributes to my not wanting an apple for quite some time after an ‘on’ phase.
Eli,
I hear you. I go through mega phases with specific foods and then it will pass. Something that helps is turning the specific food into a whole meal! If apples are the phase of the moment, I experiment with apple pie, apple oatmeal, apple crisps…etc and of course, a nice fresh raw apple. The farmers markets have many varieties. Now I am in the mood for an apple!
